A film crew from The Sunday Times was filming two exceptional artists yesterday in the St Cuthberts Mill gardens. We have sponsored three short films for 'The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2015' (Parker Harris) micro website.

Artist Lucy Willis - Lucy used Saunders Waterford,
Millford and Bockingford paper for the demo's.
Some of Lucy Willis' work  produced during filming.

The two artists filmed painting yesterday were Lucy Willis and Danny Markey. Both were very individual in style and technique, and the process was fascinating to watch. Of course they were using our very own papers, Saunders Waterford, Millford and Bockingford! Thanks to the team for doing such a great job!

St Cuthberts Mill visits Jealous Gallery and Print Studio!

Our Quality Apprentice Nicola Dobson was kindly invited to stay with John Purcell (John Purcell Paper) last week in London. Nicola was introduced to the world of printmaking by visiting an extensive array of printmakers.

Jealous Gallery and Print Studio

Nicola and John were given an extensive tour by Nick at the Jealous Studio. He took them through the whole process that they go through with their artists. Nick also stated that they use a vast amount of St Cuthberts papers, as they are delighted with the range of papers on offer. During the tour they spoke with some of the printers who were working with the 650gm² Somerset paper.

'Riot' by Ceal Warnants

The printmakers said how much they used Somerset and stated that it took the inks really well. It is ideal for prints with large areas of ink as it is heavier and so less likely to cockle under a large inked area.

“Jealous is a very trendy company and it was quite different than the other studios we visited. They started off with one press on one floor of their building and have now expanded into the whole of the building. They work with a lot of artists including street artists. Nick told me that they have been so busy that they are not taking any new commissions now for 6 weeks. They specialise in screenprinting and digital printing and they also do a hybrid of the two. If a print requires a lot of colours they will often start by doing a digital print and finish with some screen printing on top. Otherwise is it very costly. The gallery on the ground floor displays some of their prints and a huge amount were on Somerset paper.” Nicola Dobson, St Cuthberts Mill.

More of Nicola’s London visit coming soon!

Carne Griffiths - Visit

'Falling Flowers' by Carne Griffiths
(Ink, tea and alcohol on Bockingford CP(NOT) paper)

We are looking forward to a visit from the artist Carne Griffiths in March! Carne is an avid user of our Bockingford White, CP(NOT), 535gsm paper for his unique work. Carne will be able to view our papermaking processes, and follow the journey our papers take before they leave the mill. Look forward to meeting you Carne!

Carne Griffiths at work on Bockingford paper

A bit about Carne Griffiths and his creative methods:

‘’ Working primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as tea, brandy and vodka, Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life. Images are recorded in a dreamlike sense onto the page where physical boundaries are unimportant. His work creates a journey of escapism, which focuses on scenes of awe and wonder, projecting a sense of abandonment and inviting the viewer to share and explore this inner realm.

Originally from Liverpool, Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone in 1995. After completing a one-year KIAD fellowship and moving to London he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. Here he worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director. Carne produced intricate designs for the military and the film, theatre, fashion and advertising industries. His designs were used for the uniforms in the films Valkyrie, The Last King of Scotland, and in particular his ‘Red Death Coat’ was used in The Phantom of the Opera. Carne’s elaborate floral designs for Asprey were included in their first ever catwalk collection and his work was featured on the embroidered cover of the 80th Royal Variety Performance programme in 2008.

Since establishing his own studio in 2010, Griffiths has exhibited in the UK at the London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy, the London Art Fair in 2011 - 2014, and overseas with Solo exhibitions in Milan and Hong Kong in 2013, at Urban in Ibiza in 2011 and Arts After Dark, New Orleans in 2010. He also collaborated with the British photographer Rankin for a feature in the 2nd edition of Hunger Magazine in 2012. ’’
