Artist Interview: Claudia Drexhage

German artist, Claudia Drexhage, creates beautiful colour-run landscape paintings on Saunders Waterford – and her mesmerizing videos of these are loved by many.

Reflecting her deep connection with nature, Claudia’s artworks express her poetic impressions of ‘rich, wild, silent beauty of the visible and invisible landscapes’.

Claudia shares with us more about her creative process and the meaning behind her artwork.

Water is a feature in your work, what meaning does it have for you?

The element of water is essential for my work. Water represents purification, renewal, and life. Water is a great necessity without which nothing can live. Water is a cleansing, healing, psychic and loving element. The structure of the water, its course, and its movements magically determine the appearance of my work.

What do you love about using water and ink in your artworks?

In the process, the ink makes visible what otherwise would remain unnoticed. From the flowing interaction of water and colour, a beautiful and unique work of art is formed at the moment of painting, which in its genesis and evolution oscillates between chance and planned procedure.

How does it feel in the moment while you are creating your unique works?

For me painting is meditation: A Calm Refuge. The complete switching off of the surrounding environment and the presence in the here and now make up the act of painting. Unpredictability and chance are just as much a part of this moment, for me, as the anticipated artistic approach.

You have chosen Saunders Waterford for your paintings, what are the qualities of the paper that you like?

I love Saunders Waterford paper - especially the satin one at the moment. Its smooth surface allows the colour to dance on the paper before settling. I've tried different brands of paper, but I can't use any other paper to represent the flow of water like this. Despite the amount of water I use, the paper stays in very good shape.
