Millford Watercolour Paper

Millford is the newest watercolour paper developed by St Cuthberts Mill. It is styled on the discontinued Whatman™ watercolour paper, after artists grieved the loss of this unique type of watercolour paper.
It is mould made from 100% cotton (just like the original Whatman™), and its beautiful surface is created using natural woollen felts. It is deliberately created to have a high resistance to water, so it’s washes perform very differently to traditional watercolour papers.
Millford sees the welcome return of a much loved style of watercolour paper.

The Next Generation

St Cuthberts Mill has recently taken on five new apprentices! The apprenticeship is a PMO Level 2 qualification. PMO stands for Performing Manufacturing Operations. The apprenticeships are all in association with Bridgwater College in Somerset.

Nicola Dobson, St Cuthberts Mill Apprentice

Each of the apprentices are learning papermaking skills from our expert team here at the mill. Nicola Dobson (pictured) is one of our apprentices. Nicola has been learning a wide range of skills, and closely following our Quality Control Manager and Paper Chemist. After talking to Nicola she informed me of the types of procedures she has been learning. She has been quality control testing, testing incoming pulps, arranging samples and testing Zeta potentials. Zeta potential is testing system changes for optimum chemical retension within paper.

More to come soon! We’ll keep you updated on their progress!

Carne Griffiths Artist

Originally from Liverpool, Carne Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone in 1995. After completing a one-year KIAD fellowship and moving to London he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. Here he worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director.

Since establishing his own studio in 2010, Carne has exhibited in the UK at the London Original Print Fair at the Royal Academy, the London Art Fair in both 2011 and 2012, and overseas at Urban in Ibiza in 2011 and Arts After Dark, New Orleans in 2010. Carne also collaborated with the British photographer Rankin for a feature in the 2nd edition of Hunger Magazine early in 2012.

Working primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as tea, brandy and vodka Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life.

St Cuthberts Mill supports Carne Griffiths by providing paper for his work. His paper of choice is Bockingford CP(NOT) 535gsm. However he has also been experimenting with Saunders Waterford High White and Somerset papers for his remarkable work.
