Foolscap

Foolscap watermark - St Cuthberts Mill archives

The name ‘foolscap’ originates from circa 1700 in Europe. However, the earliest record of foolscap paper can be dated back to 1479 in Germany. It was named after the fools cap and bell’s watermark which was commonly used on the old folio-sized paper.
